The Artistry of Ack: the Story of ‘Velvet Horn’

velvet horn cover artToday, November 18th, 2024, marks three years since the passing of Ack van Rooijen, a true legend in Dutch and European jazz. On this day of remembrance, I find myself reflecting on his profound impact on the world of music. Ack’s talent wasn’t just something you heard—it was something you felt. His artistry, marked by a smooth, velvety tone and lyrical expression, has left a legacy that continues to inspire.

While many have written about his illustrious career spanning decades, and his performances with renowned orchestras and jazz ensembles across Europe, I’d like to take a more personal approach. To me, Ack was not just a musician but a storyteller, a master of emotional depth who connected with audiences on a profound level.

A Lyrical Genius

Rough Guide to Jazz described Ack’s artistry perfectly:

“One of the most lyrical soloists, he plays with extraordinary fluidity and flexibility, producing immensely long lines and bubbling streams of triplets. He is all quicksilver and wit, and his solos seem as natural as birdsong.”

This description captures the essence of Ack’s playing. His solos were more than notes; they were narratives filled with wit, fluidity, and a depth that made every performance unforgettable.

Crafting Velvet Horn

One of the highlights of my collaboration with Ack was writing “Velvet Horn”. This piece was part of the repertoire for the Brazil-Dutch Celebração project, a musical collaboration between myself, legendary Brazilian percussionist Robertinho Silva, and some of the finest musicians from the Dutch jazz and Latin scene.

When Ack agreed to be part of this recording, I felt deeply honored. I wanted to write something that felt personal, a piece that was tailor-made for him. Inspired by his signature sound and lyrical style, “Velvet Horn” was my attempt to capture the essence of his velvety tone.

Witnessing Ack bring this composition to life was a magical experience. His interpretation elevated the piece beyond what I could have imagined, blending his technical mastery with heartfelt emotion. It remains one of my most cherished memories as a composer.
